Shades

A sound in the distance wakes me up. I don’t know what it is, except it alarms me enough that I jackknife into a sitting position.

“I’m so sorry. Good morning,” she says again and turns back to the stove, turning off the burner and sliding a pile of scrambled eggs into a big bowl. “I made breakfast. Eat.”

“You made breakfast?”

She nods. “Eggs and toast. I figured you’d be in bad shape this morning. This should help.” Her smile is sheepish, almost shy, like she’s not sure if she’s overstepping.

“You make enough for two?”

She smiles and looks over at the table. “At least two.
